Planning a donation? Here’s what you need to know
(NC)-How much does it cost to make a difference? In a recent survey, one in four Canadians said they believe they need to give between $100 and $249 annually in charitable donations to make an impact.
The reality is when you’re donating to charity, every little bit counts. So size really doesn’t matter and even a couple of dollars can go a long way.
Some tips for planning your charitable giving:
. Do your research. Know where your funds are going before you make a donation. According to the survey, of those who give, half (50%) prefer to see their contributions assist with local or community based programs.
. Donate regularly. One third (31%) of Canadians admit they don’t have any type of regular pattern in place when it comes to donations. Many charitable organizations make it easy to donate monthly or as frequently as you’d like. Consider incorporating donations into your monthly budgets and don’t leave it until the end of the year. Plan ahead – it makes it easy to donate even a couple of dollars each month.
. Look for efficiency. Know how your money is being spent because every little bit counts. To ensure your donation goes as far as it can, find out what percentage of your donation is used to cover administrative costs.
. Follow your passion and interests. If you believe in a cause or have a special interest, find out what charities have been set up and direct your donations to an organization that you feel passionate about.
The TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (FEF) is just one example of an organization that contributes 100 per cent of every dollar donated towards funding projects within the community where the donation was made. FEF allows TD Canada Trust customers and employees to set up regular monthly donations for as little as $2 per month. Donated funds are then combined with an annual $1 million contribution from TD and allocated to local community organizations dedicated to protecting Canada’s environment and wildlife.
